Worldship Praxis

Worldship Praxis

Existence has a billion faces, each one an universe coexisting with our own.

In one such universe, disaster has struck the Earth. The near collapse of the Global Political and Financial structures came first. The eruption of a Super Volcano came next, with great damage to the Earth’s environment. In the hardship that followed, some sought advantage, or perhaps revenge, in starting a short nuclear war. As if that wasn’t enough, then the aliens invaded.

A hard existence will harden some people’s resolve.A few Problem Solvers saw that the survival of Mankind depended in getting off of the planet. A group of them took humanity first into orbit, and then on to the stars.

We follow the great Worldship Praxis as it flies silently through the darkness between the stars on its mission. Jack Sadow is the Director, or captain of the ship. Effectively immortal, the Nanobots keep him young and strong, ready to face the centuries of the voyage.

Time and Light years change Humanity. Jack must contend with a changing world within the ship and with alien life outside the ship. Each decision he makes as best he can, and only time and light years will determine if he chose well.

I stumbled across this one, and didn’t expect to read past the first 10 pages but I was pleasantly surprised.

For any fan of STTNG or sci fi in general, this is a great little book. Praxis is a massive mothership set out into the universe to try and re-colonize after earth suffered a near century of disaster.

Loved the technology, loved the grand ideas, and loved the quirky characters. Two Thumbs up!

5.0 out of 5 stars The first of a series that all Science-Fiction fans will want to read September 2, 2014

In JD Lovil’s “Worldship Praxis (The Worlds of Man Book1) The year is 2253 A.D. and the Earth we once knew is gone. A large scale nuclear exchange years prior, which – ironically, followed the massive explosion of the Super Volcano in Yellowstone National Park, has left much of the blue planet inhabitable, prompting a mass evacuation to the stars. This event, though horrific and fate altering for mankind, prompted advancement and change, for some, that wouldn’t have been seen otherwise; it also brought an invasion of the Andiki. These creatures could be likened to Earth’s preying mantises, if those mantises were 4 feet tall and intelligent. The invasion, as much as it was, was halted and decimated by the radiation took care of much of the pest problem; the outgoing Human exploration ships took care of more as they traveled.
Jack Sadow, a scientific Jack-Of-All-Trades, had his body infused with Nannites in 2016, effectively repairing his biological systems, reversing the clock from the age of 53 to an appearance (and health) of 27, and essentially imbuing him with immortality. Now he is the Captain, AKA the Director, of the Worldship Praxis, an exploratory space vessel bent on finding habitable planets, all the while dodging and engaging with the Andiki.
This is a well written novel that sets the scene perfectly for Book 2. Lovil devotes just the right amount of time on character development; enough to help you feel about Sadow, the crew and the incredibly human-like Nina, the ship’s Computer or Avatar. A great Science-Fiction offering!

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting series April 1, 2014

The author kindly sent me all three of the series and I read them all before posting the reviews as often I find that often series turn out to be serials where they run into each other and you need to read all of them. In this case there is no such problem although the series contains references to the other books they read well as complete stand-alone books, after reading them all the more I thought that they did not need to be a series as there was little relationship between the individual books.
The series are;-

Worldship Praxis (The Worlds of Man)
Shadow of Worlds (The Worlds of Man)
Vanguard of Man: The Worlds of Man Book 3

The first in the series “Worldship Praxis” is an exploration vessel which is sending colonists to distant worlds since Earth became uninhabitable and in the meantime having the odd battle with the Andiki an insect race. It is an interesting book that spends a lot of time in developing the characters and the enormous ship. I found the characters interesting including a “Pixie Sabre Tooth” and Nina the ship’s Avatar. There are themes that have been used before such as nano technology but it all comes together as an easy read novel which is no bad thing.

I usually love a good time sci-fi novel and this one is right up there with some of the best. The author created a very well-developed and intricate version of Earth’s future and gives it perspective through survival mankind. Besides the plot, I also love Jack. I read that some people didn’t and I don’t get how. At first I thought I was really going to hate him because of his decision making but when I think about it, I would’ve done the same thing. Without question the more I read such classic sci-fi fiction the more I want to know what’s next. Like I say, a solid read. Excited for the next book in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Relaxed Sci-fi September 2, 2014

An enjoyable book, the writer has a real talent for a relaxed style of writing and if I was going out to save humanity and colonize the universe I know which ship I’d like to be on. The ship would be the Praxis with the relaxed but genius Jack Sadow, no decision without a party. it is nice that the writer has taken some time to look into the science of exploration and what procedures and contact rules are needed to fly through space. It is like a cross between the Foundation series and the Stainless Steel Rat, I look forward to more from the author and jack Sadow. Five stars from me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Sci Fiction Read August 28, 2014

I always enjoy science fiction as it usually fires up my imagination. This book is no exception. The author has created a futuristic scenario where one disaster after another struck Earth. The main character, Jack Sadow who is the captain of the Worldship Praxis has to navigate through the several challenges facing him and the crew.

The book is written well with full of fast pace action and it is easy to read the pages without realizing how fast time has passed.

I would strongly recommended this book for all science fiction lovers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Delightful Story September 2, 2014

A lovely book, full of humour and humanity. Humans are looking for a way to ensure their survival, three world ships are sent out to ensure the survival of humanity after the destruction of earths habitat. The near immortal crews venture across the universe encountering and learning from civilizations, the characters are real not robots and their interaction especially with the animals is extraordinary particularly the squirrels. Something that adds humour in this well written book.
