“Criminals do not die by the hands of the law. They die by the hands of other men.” – George Bernard Shaw
Author Monica Thomas’s book ‘What a Crooked Web We Weave’ tells a story of lies and deceit centred around a young family. Rachael had a luxurious upbringing thanks to her super rich step-dad but her adult life is far from perfect. The sins of her father come back to haunt her and the string of lies and treachery woven way back in the past continue to torment her present. This then quickly escalates into a race against time to save her son and herself from the dangers that surround her.
Monica’s novel is a compulsive page turner packed with intrigue, action and excitement. You can never be sure of what’s going to happen next, just when you think you have it all figured out, newer details emerge and it turns out people you thought you knew well are just the opposite. The character of Rachael sometimes comes across as confused and weak but then her behaviour can be excused because a series of events and characters are constantly getting her tangled in a web of secrets, lies and violence. Another aspect of Monica’s writing that I really enjoy is her characterizations; they are never goody two-shoes kind or the out and out villainous type. All her characters have grey shades to their personality and even her protagonists have to go through some sort of redemption in the story line. And this makes the story more real, filled with people you will love and loath as part of its mix.
Though violent in parts I think this book will appeal to those who enjoy a light thriller.
