The Challenge:

How does one fight a demon?

Events have conspired to make Gyan and Arthur grow estranged, and she fears he wishes to replace her as his queen.

Enter Camilla, the Saxon warrior-princess, who’s so hell-bent on exacting revenge against Gyan for having killed her betrothed in battle that she’s willing to resort to the dark arts to gain the upper hand. Camilla throws the gauntlet at Gyan’s feet. One shall die, and refusal is not an option.

Now Gyan must fight all her demons—public as well as private

About the Author

Kim Headlee

Kim Headlee lives on a farm in southwestern Virginia with her family, cats, goats, Great Pyrenees goat guards, and assorted wildlife. People and creatures come and go, but the cave and the 250-year-old house ruins–the latter having been occupied as recently as the mid-twentieth century–seem to be sticking around for a while yet.

Kim is a Seattle native and a direct descendent of 20th century Russian nobility. Her grandmother was a childhood friend of the doomed Grand Duchess Anastasia, and the romantic yet tragic story of how Lydia escaped Communist Russia with the aid of her American husband will most certainly one day fuel one of Kim’s novels. Another novel in the queue will involve her husband’s ancestor, the seventh-century proto-Viking king of the Swedish colony in Russia.

For the time being, however, Kim has plenty of work to do in creating her projected 8-book Arthurian series, The Dragon’s Dove Chronicles, and publishing other novels under her imprint, Pendragon Cove Press.

4 and 1/2 Stars

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review when I signed up for the release blitz tour. I made no guarantee of a favorable review.

I love reading Arthurian legends so I just had to sign up to host the tour and I am very pleased that I did. My only regret is that it was way to short. The story line moves flawlessly and the author takes the time to ensnare you within her web. The characters are well written and engaging. The fighting sequence was simply amazing and I felt like I was right there cheering Gyan on as she battled Camilla. I also enjoyed the fact that this wasn’t a romantic retelling; not that there would have been anything wrong with that but it just would have thrown the story of course.

This was the first book I’ve read written by this author and I look forward to seeing what the author comes up with next and how the story will continue.

This is a true short story- less than half an hour to read, and it is important that you have read Dawn’s Flight first if you intend avoid spoilers. That being said, this was another wonderful addition to the Dragon’s Dove Chronicles universe, and a great showcase of Gyan’s determination to do what’s right, even when she isn’t totally sure what “right” may be.
With Headlee’s signature attention to detail and period accuracy, The Challenge thrusts you into a whole new type of Arthurian legend- one where the woman are not mere fodder for men’s distractions and rivalries, but the true story tellers and bearers of the weight of their world. 4.5 stars for this action packed tale!

If you are looking for a conventional fantasy? This is a very good book complete with warrior princesses. But if you are looking for something a bit different? This may not be to your tastes. But let me tell you this formatting and editing of this book are top notch. Much better than many other books I have read.
I am also a big fan of the way the author writes her books. It flows and you can just absorb it. It feels very organic. The story is a decent one but I guess I have been reading fantasy for so long that I tire of fantasy this feels a bit more traditional.
