Special Agent Francesca

Special Agent Francesca’s secret ambition is to prove to her successful mother that, not only can she can be as good an agent as she was, but better. As much as Frankie dislikes physical violence, it follows her like a shadow and she’s not one to back away. Nothing scares this woman – flying her own plane, driving like a lunatic, even men twice her size. On the other hand, romance sends her in a tailspin, and when she meets Sean Collins, she just can’t seem to keep it together.

Playing at being a body guard as a special favor to a buddy, Sean is fascinated with the woman in his charge. Francesca’s annoying, hard-headed and won’t take advice. On the other hand, she’s stunningly beautiful, and her naivety about men and romance is a real turn-on. One minute he’s hoping to attract her and the next he’s in danger, trying to keep her alive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Master of Character Development April 11, 2014

As a writer myself, I think that one of the true marks of an excellent author is solid, believable character development, and in my opinion, Mimi Barbour is the master of character development. Special Agent Francesca is a complex woman who can use her martial arts skills to take down the toughest of thugs, and then spin her feminine wiles effortlessly to lure a criminal profiler to her bed. After learning who her father was from the mother who chose career over child, Francesca makes a conscious decision to meet him face-to-face no matter the outcome. Fortunately for the special undercover agent, John Hampton welcomes the daughter he never knew existed with open arms. Barbour fleshes out not only Ham’s character, but the rest of Francesca’s extended family as well. Her step-mother, Mattie, is a warm, loving woman who makes Francesca feel like she’d been part of the family since forever. Little sister, Caireann wonders aloud as to what took her big sister so long to come home and tells the FBI agent that she’s been sorely missed. Story line development in this thriller is excellent as well. The twists and turns keep the excitement rolling until the end. As always from Ms. Barbour, a great read!

Love Mimi Barbour, love her books. When you can read a book that within just a few words, you are brought right into the book. You feel, taste, see everything going on. Great story lines. Fantastic characters, fantastic plots, story lines like real life both honest folk and of crooks. Humor that will have you giggling then full on belly laugh. You may even shed a tear or two at love. You will also have visit from other Las Vegas cops from the Vegas series. All in all Mimi never disappoints, I loved the book and highly recommend.
5.0 out of 5 stars Riveting April 8, 2014

I found this captivating, it has a richness, with three dimensional characters and a riveting plot. The opening chapter is fierce, grabbing the reader by the throat and not letting go. The following couple of chapters are both violent and then poignant, arousing a different set of emotions, with a domineering highly intelligent mother Kathleen Donovan and an introverted daughter, Francesca, an undercover FBI agent who hides her introversion under a brittle mask. The author cleverly combines the harsh elements with sensitive emotive qualities to develop a complex personality that fascinates and ensnares Sean Collins, a psychiatrist and LVPD profiler. The author has the reader on the edge of her/his seat as the plot develops. Francesca can kick ass as hard as any man, she’s a force to contend with in a fight against the odds. In the first couple of chapters she finds her long lost Dad, John and siblings, so I am not giving away any spoilers, Then just as she bonds with a step-mother whose as warm as buttered toast, the plot explodes and Francesca brings out the big guns on one roller coaster of a ride. Vibrant complex characters, a twisting plot, chilling and inescapable, a real page turner. Highly recommended

I rarely write a bad review, and if someone else had felt the way I did then I probably wouldn’t do this. I’m going to be honest and say I only read about twenty percent of this book, so my review is based on that. I went into this story having high hopes given the high reviews, and therefore I’m hoping with this review to not put someone off buying this book (which I’m sure the author worked very hard on) but to offer a bit of variety in what to expect. Firstly my impression on Frankie was very mild. She fought off attackers, had a big mouth (at least at the bar) on her and seemed to show some inner strength and smarts when she intentionally decides to live in a bad neighbourhood. But she was inconsistent. What type of FBI agent who specialises in undercover can’t help but be drunk off one drink? Who doesn’t state that they’re a cop right to begin with when you have two aggressive men ready to attack you? Then there is her mother. She’s willing to give up a man she loves, while pregnant because she wants to focus on her career and she basically ignores her daughter completely. It didn’t line up with who she was meant to be. Either she should have tried to make it work with the father (free babysitter!), had an abortion or just gave Frankie up for adoption. Keeping her to herself, not telling the father and then ignoring her kid for her entire life didn’t make any sense. Meeting her stepmother and father. I haven’t been in this situation, but I’d imagine you wouldn’t immediately consider your step mum as such, but rather just call her by her name (even in internal dialogue) and it rang so untrue calling her father dad during their first meeting. This was a man she just met and had only found out days previous that this was her father. Read more ›

I love this new book! It”s a book that stands quite nicely on its own; however, if you have read the “Vegas” series there’s a great tie-in. I hope that this is only the first in a long series. The book definately makes me want more-and soon. Francesca is a little-bit on the Lone Ranger side when it comes to her job as an FBI agent. The feds don’t like it, but I sure did. Write fast Mimi!
