About the author
Dr. Rhodes is originally from Harlan, Kentucky and grew up in the southeastern area of that state known as the Appalachians. In this region, the word “Appalachian” is pronounced with the third syllable sounding like “latch.” This area is known for its mountains, coal, and spectacular beauty. The word Appalachia is an Indian word and can be defined as “endless mountain range.” The Indians thought the Appalachian Mountains went on forever and ever and ever.
Her ancestry is strongly tied to native Cherokee peoples as reflected in her deep appreciation for the land and animals living on it. As the youngest of 12 children, she also developed an understanding of the need for some “quiet time” alone. Her debut coloring book for adults, Nature’s Hiding Places, demonstrates this appreciation and understanding.
With detailed, intricate drawings that combine animals, plants, flowers and patterns, this coloring book offers a creative outlet for adults. Adult coloring artists can make their own world of color using a variety of artistic media. From the visual experience of choosing colors to the tactile experience of the repetitive motion of putting this color to paper, each step focuses and relaxes the mind. Stress and worry can be pushed to the side in order to enjoy the present.
What coloring offers is explained aptly by clinical psychologist Kimberly Wulfert for EverydayHealth.com:
“In coloring, you’ve got this physical sensation of the tool you’re using touching on the paper. You also have the feeling in your hands and fingers holding this tool, and moving in different rhythms as you fill in the space,” she says, adding that, “you’re being mindful, and when you move in a rhythmic fashion for an extended period of time, that becomes a meditation.”
Each page of Nature’s Hiding Places is printed single-sided which opens up a variety of pens and pencils that can be used. Additional variety is provided by orienting the pages either landscape or portrait. Also, none of the coloring pages run off the page or into the binding of the book. Each page, when colored, is a unique piece of art with harmony and balance as the main goal.
The images in the coloring book are designed with adults in mind. Older children could possibly also complete them. The pictures are comprised of hiding animals in flowers, plants and patterns, or the opposite with flowers, plants and patterns hiding in the animals. Upon completion, some pages may reveal a surprise within the picture of hidden objects.
Nature’s Hiding Places is available now and is the first of a trilogy of books devoted to adult coloring. The other two, Mystical Hiding Places and Whimsical Hiding Places, are to be released respectively, in the fall and winter of 2015.
