Having spent a happy childhood being born and raised in Auckland, New Zealand in the ‘80’s as a young adult I became restless.
I am a self-confessed red-headed, freckled faced, plain Jane so it was a big step for me to make the decision to quit my dream-job where I was training to be a vet nurse.
Somehow I knew that somewhere life had other ideas for me. After a few weeks of soul-searching I took a job that I considered to be a fill-in position, working as a sales rep for an office supply company.
This is how I met Kishore, a guy from India who has been in New Zealand for two years and was definitely looking for love.
Despite my initial hesitation and a nervous start, I decide to go out with him. We quickly become an item, regardless of the fact that inter-racial couples were practically unheard of at that time.
We try to ignore the prejudice we face from family and friends and battle on with building our relationship.
Then, the inevitable happened, we become engaged and make the decision to travel to India to meet Kishore’s family. After a long journey we arrive in New Delhi – I am absolutely astounded by its amazing sights. I meet Kishore’s family and he shows me ‘his’ India. I go through a harrowing ordeal when I get lost in a busy market place and just when I have recovered from the fright Kishore’s mother throws a bombshell – by suggesting Kishore and I get married before we leave India.
How can I even think of getting married in a foreign country without any of my family or friends for support?

Julie & Kishore is based on my real life but I have changed alot of the content to make the story more interesting so of course it is fiction. Just like the book, my husband and I faced some adversity as an inter-racial couple in the ‘80’s. For a long time I wanted to write a book abut us but work, life and children took over. Eventually we started our own business and I did some of the office work from home and as my children were at school this enabled me to find time to write. Once I started writing, I could not stop! I thought, ate, dreamed and breathed the words. Like most writers I kept a notebook with me at all times to jot down my thoughts, which I did, even if it was in the middle of the night.

My husband is an absolute romantic at heart just like Kishore, so this part was easy to write and I LOVE our story! I want other people to read about it. While writing I kept thinking of people reading the finished book and their thought patterns as they read it, this encouraged me to keep going.
In the book I have included many explanations of Indian customs and cultural ways. When I met my husband I had no idea about Indian people and their lives – like most people at that time. Any knowledge I did have, I was to find out I was so wrong! I want other people to understand the Indian culture from my point of view.
I have already written Julie & Kishore – Take Two, the sequel to Julie & Kishore, I am at the polishing and editing phase, which as any author knows is a repetitive and drawn-out process!
I am also writing a third book, Nina’s Art, which has many of the same characters but is a different story.
