This is the first book I’ve read by Inna Hardison, but it won’t be the last. She is a beautiful writer and her melancholy tone drew me in.

The premise of Escape reminded me a little of Children of Men and The Handmaid’s Tale. Set in the aftermath of a world ravaged by illness and controlled by a totalitarian government, it is told in multiple points of view.

Hardison also takes the reader through differing time periods where explanations of how the current situation came to be.

Divided into groups where one is seemingly privileged over the other, what is slowly unveiled to the reader are layers of horror. In a world dedicated to safeguarding the survival of the human race, what is lost is people’s humanity.

When the two groups collide, a chain of events is set in motion that upsets the finally balanced structure those in power seek to maintain.

Hardison weaves an engrossing tale with likable characters and something rare in dystopian-apocalyptic works: the gift of kindness. The leads and secondary characters retain their humanity when it would be so easy to fall into cruelty.

Some of my criticisms of this work are that with the multiple points of view and time periods, the story turned in on itself. Differing characters and time periods are some of my favourite literary devices, but at times it took me out of the moment and threw me into another one when I didn’t want to be.

Two characters, sisters, had similar names, and I had to read twice for clarification in order to determine who was narrating that section.

The pacing slowed at thirty percent and then recovered its groove, drawing me in again. Although I won’t spoil, I did find the ending a little unconvincing and convenient.

In saying that, I look forward to continuing on with this series and learning the fate of the characters.

Highly recommended.

With thanks to Vs. the Writer.

Written for the same type of audience as The Hunger Games, I devoured this book…as I do any of Inna Hardison’s writings. She has a way of putting words together that grabs you and carries you along to another place and time, to others’ thoughts and feelings. And yet she does it easily, without force or gimmick. She puts you inside her characters’ heads and hearts without a lot of superfluous words that I have found, in the writings of other authors, wholly distracting. Inna’s words are carefully chosen and necessary and never pretentious. I cannot believe there are 5 books in this series to enjoy – how lucky are we to share so much of this story and her writing. I cannot wait to begin Volume 2.

There are scenes in Escape that are now seared into my mind – the boy returning to his home to find his family gone and his dog dead . . . . the stark, empty city, inhabited by a lone madman who remembers the sins of the past . . . . the scientist haunted by the dead snow-bound babies who inadvertently brings down the end of the world . . . .

Inna is a stunning writer. Her book unfolds like a delicate flower; this isn’t the Dystopian story for you if you want kids murdering each other in an arena – this book shows how the world will really end, not with a bang but with a whimper, brought about by those with the best of intentions.

I wish the writer had published traditionally – she deserves the attention. Fantastic read.

Inna Hardison lays out a nuanced views of troubled characters in an even more troubled world. I can’t say much without saying spoilers, but she takes you on an immersive tour of a dystopian society where plenty can go wrong and not much is praised. The characters are raw and real, and the emotions they evoke even more so.

I would recommend this book to almost anyone looking to pick up a good read. Though it’s not something you can fly through in a few hours and definitely isn’t light reading, it’s deep, well-represented and creative. I cannot wait for the sequel.

Post-apocalyptic adolescent fantasy that is engaging enough for adults. It reminded me of The City of Ember series by Jeanne DuPrau, which I thoroughly enjoyed as a light read right alongside my kids. Polished plot, vivid descriptions, and intriguing characters dealing with excruciating moral issues left me eager to read the next in the series.

Format: Kindle Edition

I’ve never read anything by Inna Hardison before, but I do like science fiction. It was on sale, so I gave it a try. I’m glad I did! The story and characters are compelling and the world she creates will grab you and not let go! Very nice.

Now to wait patiently for book two.

I am an avid fan of sci-fi and fantasy novels. This story is neither and both at the same time. Set in a dystopian “other” space, the people, attitudes and settings are all instantly recognizable. You know these people- you went to school with them, they sat at your lunch table. And yet…. there is something “off”, something not quite right. The exploration of what causes this uneasy feeling takes you through an utterly believable adventure that has you guessing at each turn….why is this happening and who is behind it? Inna Hardison has done a brilliant job of rendering a world that captivates your imagination and lingers, long after you’ve closed the book.
