If you’re tired of kilts, kings, vampires, and zombies, try this excellent first offering from A.B. Michaels. You won’t be sorry. With a deft hand and prodigious research, she has crafted a tale that spans the Klondike Gold Rush, turn of the century New York City, and boisterous, bustling San Francisco just prior to the 1904 quake.Augustus ‘Gus’ Wolff and Amelia ‘Lia’ Starling meet in San Francisco in 1903, and the sparks begin to fly! Gus is fresh from the Klondike gold fields, and Lia is slowly making a name for herself as an accomplished painter. I loved both of these characters from the get-go. Gus is the quintessential self-made man. Throw in a dash of loyalty, compassion, strength, and rugged good looks, and what’s not to like?? Lia, the daughter of a wealthy New York businessman, defies convention in her pursuit of life as an artist. When a particularly difficult decision makes her a pariah to New York Society, she packs up her easel and paints and heads to San Francisco to lick her wounds. With a heart of gold and the soul of an artist, she’s the perfect match for Gus…but only if they can trust each other enough to share the secrets of their pasts.Michaels is a bit of a painter in her own right, but with words rather than brushes. Her poignant depiction of life in a Klondike mining camp, especially for the women and children, gave me a true appreciation of the desperation of the times. I also enjoyed the way she inserted real-life characters among the fictional, adding depth and a sense of realism to the storyline.

I look forward to the next offering in this series!

Always surprise myself, not a reader of historical books. But this story was just fantastic. Characters so endearing, and the story line was perfect. Ah and the love and Romance were perfect. Just beautiful. Highly recommended to true romance readers.

My first thought when I finished The Art of Love, was,”What, it’s over, Noooo, I want more”. I was so relieved to realize it is the beginning of a series, dare I say the beginning of a saga? I hadn’t read a romance in a long time and the combined promise of romance and historical fiction drew me in. I love that the author was able to combine the two elements without boring me with dry history or sickening me with too sweet romance. To me a good romance novel isn’t about the ending but rather the journey to the end. AB Michaels takes you on a journey through unfamiliar locales and makes them visible in the mind’s eye. There are lots of little tidbits that fill in the background and round out not just the characters but the scenery and feel of the time. I can’t wait until the next “Sinner’s Grove” episode is ready. Way to go A.B., you are on your way!
